Bob Sumner USA
**Tuesday 2nd June 7:30pm
“a blend of past, present, and future sounds” – American Songwriter
Singer-songwriter Bob Sumner cites the musically progressive sensibilities of his heroes when talking about the spirit of his new album, Some Place to Rest Easy, out now via Fluff & Gravy (worldwide) and North Country Collective (Canada). “They were always creating something new, something different,” he says of idols like George Jones, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings. With that ideology in mind, Sumner set about creating an album that takes as much inspiration from the audio production of Randy Travis as it does the lyrical soul of Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker—a melding of eras, sounds, concepts, and stylings that’s informed by the past, but never bound by it.
With Some Place to Rest Easy, Sumner picks up the tempo compared to his previous releases, balancing the stirring lyrical depth fans have come to expect with a more buoyant, lively feel. “It felt appropriate to give the music itself some joy,” says the man who’s made a career out of tapping into difficult-to-touch-on, real-life stuff in a relatable, palatable manner. In the end, that’s what Sumner’s music has always been about—more than a single sound, influence, instrumental, or clever line. “I always want people to feel something,” Sumner explains. “If I heard that this album helped somebody that was feeling down, even just by feeling some other emotion for a little while, that’s the number one thing for me.”

Albi & The Wolves
*** Wednesday 1st July 7:30pm
Albi & The Wolves set fire to stages and fill hearts with hope with their uplifting and relatable alternative indie-folk songs. Since 2014 Chris Dent, the proud albino front man Albi, Pascal Roggen and Micheal Young have crafted a stage show that’s brimming with energy and moments to pause for reflection.
Though the band is made up of typical acoustic trio instrumentation (Electric violin, guitar, double bass, a stomp, and their three vocals) the result of their collaboration stands out in their genre and defies what would traditionally be called “folk”, more alleging with modern Americana.
Slick harmonies, soaring violin, and sweeping dynamics help characterise the bands unique sound, a sound that won them the Best Folk Artist Award at the 2018 Aoteroa Music Awards.
They are an act to see live so if an opportunity arises, do not miss it.

Den Miller
Thursday 24th September 7:30pm
Strong melodies, catchy sing-along choruses and intelligent lyrics, are the trademark of songs composed and performed by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Den Miller. Den is an engaging and entertaining live performer, delivering his music and his message with clarity, energy and a good deal of humour.
His latest album “Bless The Rains” presents songs inspired by his time living in Kenya, including stereotypes, difficult decisions, corrupt leaders, gratitude for privilege, gratitude even for bad things, the power of hope and … tea. Den’s already known for an unusual viewpoint that entertains and is thought-provoking and his new album widens the perspective further.
During his performances you can expect songs “from wildly comic to deeply poignant”, backed by guitar, keyboard, harmonica, autoharp and, often, the audience. “An experience not to be missed.”

The Three Legg'd Mare
Saturday 26th September 7:30pm
Aberystwyth-based Three Legged Mare have been entertaining audiences for over 10 years with their inspired renditions of popular (and lesser know) songs from the traditional music canon of Wales, England and beyond. And throwing in some of their own songs besides.
Their lively and sensitive interpretations of old songs of madness, love, death, adventure, injustice and everyday life are infused with close vocal harmonies and backed by a wide variety of instruments (including Appalachian dulcimer, fiddle, bouzouki, shruti, mandolin, whistles, and pibgorn).
Expect a captivating performance full of humour, history and heart. A rollicking folk outfit known for foot-stomping rhythms, raucous singalongs and irresistible energy!
